Doing New Things & Meeting New People: My Personal Experience

January 3, 2016

I’ve been contacted by quite a few people recently asking me to write a blog post to inspire people to do new things and meet new people. Rather than just talking to you guys and telling you to do it, I wanted to give you a story of my own to prove the point I’m trying to make.

About 5 years ago, I heard that there was a new Frankie and Benny’s opening near me so decided to apply for a job. I was lucky enough to be invited in for an interview. The problem was that it was a group interview; I’d never done a group interview before so was super nervous and decided not to go.

Although I’d already decided not to go, I couldn’t stop thinking about whether it was the right decision or not. At last minute I decided that I would go. I wanted to do something new that I hadn’t done before and hoped that I’d meet some new people. After all, what was the worst thing that could happen?

When I got to the interview, there were loads of other people there. We eventually got split up into groups to take part in an activity. Each group was given a pack of pasta and had to come up with an invention using the pasta. This seemed totally impossible and I was super nervous that everyone in the group would have all these amazing ideas and I wouldn’t have anything.

There were about 5 – 6 people in a group. I started chatting to a guy that happened to be stood next to me in my group and we came up with a crazy idea of ‘spaghetti hair’. We made up this whole invention where each type of pasta was a different kind of hair. Everyone else in the group thought we were mad but we thought it was amazing! Anyway the point is that we got along from the word go and it made the interview go by like a breeze!

After the group work, we all got taken off individually to have a 1-2-1 interview before we left. This meant that I didn’t have chance to get this guys name!

Fast forward to a few days later and I received a random friend request on Facebook by someone called Paolo. Naturally I thought ‘oh god, it’s another of those freaky guys’ but when I looked, it happened to be that guy that I’d met at the interview. I was extremely happy and accepted straight away and from that day, we have never stopped talking!

Paolo is now one of my best friends in the whole world and possibly the closest person to me. We share everything in common from exactly the same music taste and both playing guitar to the same career path and ambitions. We’ve had countless amounts of memories and if I’ve ever needed someone, he’s always been there for me.

I wasn’t going to go to that interview; I’d totally written it off and it was a total last minute decision that I went. If I hadn’t of gone to the interview, I never would’ve met one of the best people to ever come into my life. Although I didn’t walk away from the interview with what I went in for, a job; I walked away with a best friend for life.

The point of the story is that you never know who you’re going to meet. Don’t write off an opportunity just because you’re nervous or don’t know anyone! You don’t know what’s going to happen. Push yourself out of your comfort zone, get out there and meet new people. You never know, it could be one of the best things you’ve ever done!

Hope you enjoy guys!
